Heat pumps

Do heat pumps work in Northern Ontario winters?

Yes. The cold-climate heat pumps we install are rated to keep heating at outdoor temperatures down to -30°C. Heat output and efficiency drop as it gets colder, so the system has to be sized for your home, and most homes keep a backup heat source for the coldest days.

Can a heat pump heat my entire home?

Often, yes, when the system is sized for the home's heat loss and the heat can reach every room. Ducted systems use your existing ductwork. Ductless systems use one or more indoor heads. Layout, insulation and air leakage all play a part, which is why we assess the home first.

Can a heat pump replace my furnace?

In some homes a heat pump can be the main heating system for most or all of the year. Whether it should fully replace your furnace depends on the home, the system selected and how you want to handle the coldest days. We'll explain the options for your home.

Can a heat pump cool my home in summer?

Yes. In summer the system reverses and moves heat from inside your home to the outdoors, the same way an air conditioner does. One system gives you both heating and cooling.

Home batteries

How does a home backup battery work?

A battery stores electricity so your home can use it later. An inverter converts that stored energy into power your home can use, and the system can switch to battery power when grid power is interrupted.

Can a battery power my entire home during an outage?

Not always. Some systems back up the whole home, and many back up selected essential circuits. What your battery can power, and for how long, depends on battery capacity, inverter capacity, the home's electrical demand, which circuits are backed up and how the system is configured.

How long will a battery last during a power outage?

There's no single number. Runtime depends on how much energy the battery stores and how much your home is using. A fridge, lights and internet use far less than electric heat or a dryer. We'll estimate runtime for your home based on what you want backed up.

Can a battery reduce my electricity bill?

It can. A battery can charge when electricity costs less and supply your home when it costs more, so you buy less electricity at higher prices. Results depend on your electricity price plan, how much you use, the battery size and its settings.

How much can I save with a battery?

Depending on your home's energy use, battery capacity, electricity rates and system configuration, a properly designed battery system may significantly reduce electricity costs, in some cases by 70–80%. Savings vary from home to home and aren't guaranteed.

What determines battery runtime?

Battery capacity, inverter capacity, your home's electrical demand, heating and cooling use, which appliances are running, the weather, how backup is configured and how many circuits are powered.

Rebates, financing and installation

What rebates may be available?

Through Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program, eligible homeowners may qualify for up to $7,500 for a cold-climate air source heat pump, up to $10,000 for solar panels with battery storage, and $500 for a heat pump water heater. Available rebates depend on the homeowner, property, equipment, installation and current program requirements. We also help households check whether they qualify for monthly Hydro bill credits. See rebates.

How does financing work?

Financing is available for qualified homeowners. Tell us about your project and we'll go over the options with you. Financing options starting from as little as $20/month may be available. Approval, rates, payments and terms depend on the lender and your application.

How long does installation take?

Many heat pump and battery installations are completed in one to two days. Larger or more complex projects can take longer. We'll give you a timeline with your quote.

What does the 12-year parts and labour warranty mean?

Our HVAC installations, such as heat pumps, furnaces and air conditioning, are backed by our 12-year parts and labour warranty for added peace of mind. We'll go over the warranty details for your system before you commit.

Do HVAC systems require maintenance?

Yes. Changing filters regularly and having the system checked by a professional periodically helps it run efficiently and last longer. For heat pumps, also keep the outdoor unit clear of snow, ice and debris.
